Hanging with Argentines and Laughter

Tonight was the best night so far in Buenos Aires. We were invited to go to pizza at 10pm at a girl's house from church. We arrived seemingly fashionably late (1020) but we were of course the first to arrive because this is Argentina and 10pm means 11pm. The 3 girls who were there (besides Sam, Christa, and I) started to make pizza and while they were cooking and cutting vegetables we hung out in the kitchen and talked with them. One girl was from Venezuela and the other two from Buenos Aires (but one works in Brazil as a reporter). When they started to cut onions my eyes started to water so much, so everyone was making fun of me saying "don't be sad. its ok ;-P" I laughed thinking, "How is it that the only time I cry is when I smell onions?" (and when that happens its like a waterfall).  We spent the next hour or so talking with the reporter and then were joined by the other girls and 2 boys (all in their twenties). All of us just chatted and ate pizza and laughed. I kept thinking to myself "I would totally be friends with these people if I lived in Argentina forever"  Tomorrow we might go to a historical march with them.

After dinner one of the boys started to play guitar and we spent the next 2 hours or so singing both Spanish and English songs, but usually got stuck with the words part way through. At one point two of the girls started swing dancing with each other and were having such a good time. I think we only got through 2 full songs with our lack of lyrical skills, but we got through many parts of songs. When we forgot the lyrics to any of the songs everyone just started laughing. At one point we even made the 32 year old neighbor cry because she was laughing so hard, which of course just made us laugh harder.  Finally we were smart enough to look up lyrics online so we could sing along.

Something that Christa pointed out: We did not see a single cellphone in use during the 5 hours we were over. In the U.S. when we hang out in groups either people are texting, take phone calls, or just have their phone out in general. Part of the reason the night was so fun is that everyone present was just that...PRESENT! We were there to be there with each other and nothing else mattered. It was so nice not to feel tied down by a phone or constantly be checking the time.  "Be here now!" (Gordon's favorite slogan).

It is now 4am and I just got home :-) What a great day!

Saludos,
Bot
