First off I want to apologize for not having more pictures. I am usually too focused on whatever I'm doing to remember that I have a camera.
So Futbol:
Last night I had my first cultural group of playing soccer (futbol in Argentina). From the description this was going to be a mixed Argentine-American group but it ended up being 3 Argentines and 12 Americans (from our program). We were split randomly into 3 groups of 5 (1 Argentine, 1 American boy, and 3 American girls per team). One team somehow ended up with 2 girls who play soccer for their universities, an athletic boy, and another girl who definitely has some experience in soccer so that team dominated every game so kept the field (that was not my team). They had passing and shooting plays down.
Every 5 minutes my team and the other not-so-good team would switch on and off to try to beat this team. That never happened! However, I did score my first goal ever (I played soccer for 6 years but always played defense or midfield so did not get many shooting opportunities)! My team was really fun though: Christa, Taylor, and Paul from our program and an Argentine guy (who did not really help us that much). We also made some friends with the other people in our program. It was such a fun opportunity to just kick back (literally) and hang out while doing something active.
This week has had a few fails of communication (which are actually just comical at this point):
1) First, my Argentine History class at the university had some readings that we were supposed to acquire from the fotocopiadora (photocopier). After class last Wednesday I went with other foreign students and we asked for the copies we needed. They told us that they did not have anything on file for our class so I was not able to get my readings. Today I found out from someone else in my class that she went back today and they did have one (of the two) readings. However, I still won't be able to do the work because I have that class tomorrow before I will be able to go to the fotocopiadora.
*I am getting a tutor for this class and my fiction class starting next week (?) which will help my comprehension a lot*
2) Today I was eating dinner with my host parents and we had just eaten dessert of peaches and yogurt. Marta asked if I wanted an alfahor (the greatest cookie ever). I was pretty full so I responded "not now. but..." Marta told me where it was in the freezer but Ariel took this as instruction to get the alfahor out for me, so excitedly he gave it to me. I felt bad telling him "oh I was going to eat it later" so I just took it and started eating it. Marta turned around after Ariel left and was like "I thought you were going to eat it later!" I did not know how to respond so I said "I couldn't resist" She just laughed. I finished it and as expected I was overfull (should have waited til later!) Glad that Marta understood my initial intention with the alfahor.
-1) I labeled this -1 because it was awhile ago
Whenever Christa and I go to Delicity (our second favorite place to meet up after class) we get the same waitress who literally never gets our order right because she doesn't understand our American accents. For instance I ordered "té" (tea) the first time we went there and literally had to walk over to the tea box to point out what I was talking about to which she responded "oh té" THAT IS WHAT I SAID! (Apparently I don't say my Ts right" Also, Christa ordered water sin gas (like normal still water) the other day and the waitress brought bubbly water. We have problems ordering food.
Just another day in Argentina! Next time you hear from me I will tell you about Patagonia!!!!!
6 years!!!
