Hi Friends!
I am trying not to blog too much because I dont want to bore you but I couldnt resist.
As many of you know I am a tour guide at Gordon. I love this job because it allows me to meet interesting people and share my experiences and love of Gordon to others who are seeing it for the first time.
I have lived in Buenos Aires now for a month and a half but still have so much city to see. Today I spent time with Christa's parents, who are visiting for the week. We were able to take a 4 hour bike tour of the south side of the city (which I have not spent much time in because I live in the North). We went through Puerto Madero (the wealthiest and newest section of Buenos Aires-first pic below), La Boca (a section with beautifully colored buildings where many immigrants lived in the late 1800s (?) see pictures below), San Telmo (which is where there are lots of vendors on Sundays) and Plaza de Mayo (where I spend a good portion of Wednesdays, and which is also the govt center).
Our tour guide was fabulous! She is from Buenos Aires but spoke almost perfect English. Even though we had a few flat tires throughout the trip, she managed them very well, taking us on a detour through real La Boca to find a bike shop. (*Note: The Northern Side of the city is wealthier, so we were in the poorer section) I enjoyed this part of the tour because La Boca in general is very "touristic" but this part (the "real" Buenos Aires) is not seen often by tourists. The contrast between the houses/shacks here and those in the Northern part is unbelievable. You almost feel like you are in a completely different city. We finished the tour by seeing the monument of Mafalda, the most famous Argentine cartoon. She is a little girl who knows more about politics than her parents and always asks them really hard questions (to which they are always taken by surprise and dont have responses) because she is very concerned about the state of the world. I got to read some of Mafalda's comics during my Spanish conversation class at Gordon and I feel like now that I live here I could appreciate them so much more! (Sorry about the bad quality of my photo.)
As we were on the tour I couldnt help but miss tour guiding this semester at Gordon. After I graduate I am planning on being a special ed teacher, but since Ill have summers off, I can totally see myself in the tourism industry, giving tours (in both English and Spanish) in Boston. Right now I am a Spanish and Ed major but everyone asks me what I am going to do with my Spanish major if I'm not going to TEACH Spanish. Now I have a response: I want to be a bilingual tour guide during the summers :-)
That's all for now! Chau!
P.S. My Spanish continues to improve. I dont have to think as much now to speak Spanish, which is more convenient for conversation.Thank you for your prayers. Please continue to pray for me to understand my classes (especially fiction and history) and get better at Tango.
that's so cool! i could totally see you as a bilingual tour guide! oh i'm so impressed by you and your future life plans! love you and can't wait to see you in the summer!
